Patty's Story - Path Lighting Would Help

by Darcy Kitching, about 7 years ago

[Story collected at Neighborhood Office Hours, Arapahoe Ridge.]

"I walk a lot: I walk for exercise, I walk the dogs, I walk for fun. I like the fact that I can walk to a grocery store within 10 minutes of my house. I live on a multi-use path north of Iris, but it’s not lit, so my teenagers don’t want to walk on the path at night to get to friends’ houses or to get home. It would make a huge difference to have low lighting for safety. I love the paths. We chose to move to Boulder so our... Continue reading

    Jill's Story - Full Circle

"I began walking because I grew up in a family where my mom didn’t have a driver’s license, so we didn’t have a car. Everywhere we wanted to go, we walked. I got used to it – it was our lifestyle. Later, I fell away from it and became really car dependent. I got back into walking in my 30s and have walked all over Europe, Hawaii, part of Canada, and the continental United States. Walking keeps my head clear."

Doris' Story - Footprints in the Snow

[Story collected at Neighborhood Office Hours Arapahoe Ridge.]

"I’ve been walking for more than 30 years, in different parts of the country. In Massachusetts when it snowed, I would walk and see only my own footprints as I came back. I came here about six weeks ago. It was snowing, and since I love walking in the snow, I went out on the sidewalk, and there were already about 15 sets of footprints. I thought to myself, now this is a walking community! I think it’s wonderful to be in a place where people have an underlying philosophy that they... Continue reading

    Klaus' Story - Walking Everywhere!

"I started walking in Germany. I walked to Luxembourg, then I walked in Los Angeles, up and down the beach, then I walked across the mountains, and in Denver quite a bit, and now I’m walking all over Boulder! I walk up and down Pearl, up and down the mountains, all over the place. I walk when there is too much traffic, and I use my bike for longer trips."

"I live in the Uptown Broadway neighborhood up in north Boulder. It’s a 15-minute neighborhood, which means that almost everything I need is within a 15-minute walk. I love the fact that I can walk to shopping, bars, restaurants and so many other cool places. I want to make sure that we replicate that opportunity all around Boulder for people who love walking."

Mark's Story - The Freedom of Walking

"I’ve lived in Boulder for 10 years overall – I grew up here as a kid and moved back four years ago. I’ve never owned a car. I grew up walking to my elementary school, which was a block away. Then, I moved to a really auto-centric town in North Carolina and suddenly, at 11 years old, all of my freedom was gone. Coming back to Boulder, I can live the life I was shaped by – walking! It’s never a bad time to walk. I live in the Goss Grove neighborhood, so... Continue reading

    Patricia's Story - Traffic Concerns

by Darcy Kitching, about 7 years ago

[Story collected at the TMP Launch event.]

"I live near McGuckin’s, but I have to cross Canyon and Folsom to get there. The most hazardous thing is the yellow left-turn arrow because the drivers are not looking for me, they’re looking for a break in the traffic. Pretty soon, I’m not going to be able to drive, so I’ll have to walk to get to the grocery store. I would ride my bike, but I don’t feel safe out there anymore."

"On April 1, 2009, I sold the last car that I owned. About 8 days later, I did my last eGo Car Share rental. Turns out, that was the last day I drove a car. I’ll get in cars when I need to – maybe once a month – but otherwise, I'm busing or bicycling or walking. That includes getting places for work. It helps being in Boulder. I started the transition to going without a car in Greenbelt, MD, and the infrastructure wasn’t quite so developed, the bus system not... Continue reading
