    The Ideal Social Activity

by hbmodern, over 6 years ago

Walking for me is the ideal social activity. If I’m going on a date, I’ll always take walking over grabbing coffee. If I’m catching up with my mom on the phone, I’ll walk. If I’m meeting with a friend, I’ll seek out a place that we can both walk to, together.

Every autumn, my family visits my brother and I in Boulder. Both of us are students at CU. Aside from enjoying restaurants, trails, CU’s campus, and Pearl Street, we also take long walks around town. We’ve continued this tradition for three years, and Mapleton Hill reigns as our favorite... Continue reading

Making Boulder Pedestrian-Friendly for our Youth

by ghostbreakfastbun, over 6 years ago

I wish my children could independently and safely walk out of our neighborhood. Traffic lights help children be seen at intersections, but there’s new set of skills to master to cross safely at a crosswalk. The two crosswalks most important to my children are the crosswalks at Kalmia/19th and Iris/15th. Neither have a pedestrian-operated flashing light, which makes both of these crossings daunting and scary for children. For my children’s safety, I feel like flashing lights in these locations are absolutely required, in addition to an audible noise and lighted LED strip when it’s safe to walk.

    I think another... Continue reading

Seeking a New Boulder Walking Story

by Sarah, over 6 years ago

Walking writes me, and my walking creates stories about where I sojourn.

For decades, I’ve walked daily wherever I’ve found myself – Michigan, Prague, Toronto, Dallas, Denver, Boulder, Amherst – the list exceeds the word count here. Rambling covers rural, urban, seaside, or mountain routes.

Walking in Boulder is a mixed bag. Sidewalks abound – or they don’t. Although we have crosswalks, some with signals, some with traffic lights, drivers and cyclists (especially) often ignore them, imperiling the fragile pedestrian in their crosshairs. Nor are pedestrians saints – they often cross willy-nilly with their eyes glued to cell phones. I... Continue reading

Ann"s Story - Streets Prioritized For Pedestrians

Parts of Boulder are wonderful places to experience the outdoors on foot.  The city's mountain trails and greenways are some of the best anywhere. Boulder's great trail system and the fact that my family and I can walk to about everything we need makes this city a special place for us to live.  I especially appreciate that I can walk to the majority of places where I volunteer, easily access parks with my granddaughter and even get my 102 year old mom out a little.  With all that said, now is the time to make Boulder a far more walkable... Maria's Story - Motivated by a Love of Nature

by Darcy Kitching, about 7 years ago

[Story collected in a personal interview.]

"Sometimes, I feel like a caged bird here in Boulder. It’s hard for me to connect with others because of the language barrier. But I love connecting with nature. I grew up on a farm in Zacatecas, Mexico. I want my kids to love mother nature just as I do. Walking with my children is the foundation of our relationship, and it makes me feel like I have more freedom.

"My children attend three different schools. We walk or ride our bikes to school every day. During the walk or ride, we talk about... Continue reading

"We ride buses and walk to wherever we’re going. In the winter, ice is the real problem – that, and the mountains of snow piled up by snow plows at the intersections. It’s flat-out dangerous! Good sidewalk conditions, including curb cuts not filled with snow or rushing water, are critical to those of us who need to walk or use wheelchairs.

"It’s fun to walk in Boulder on the paths along the ditches. I’ve walked many of the paths with friends, but the Boulder Creek path is just too busy. And the standard-width sidewalks... Continue reading

"I walk a lot. I usually walk downtown and back, or I walk on North Street and back. I do at least one long walk a day, and I take the bus all the time. I just love to walk outside. I walk for health reasons – I’m 77 years old, so I have to walk to stay alive!

"My only problem is the bicyclists on the sidewalks. They come right up behind you, and then they say, ‘On your left!’ ‘On your right!’ They scare me to death because I don’t hear them.... Continue reading

Nicole's Story - Recovery Can Be Difficult

by Darcy Kitching, about 7 years ago

[Story collected in a personal interview.]

"It was the end of last April. I was crossing Broadway at North Street, and I got hit by a car. Since then, I haven’t been able to step up on curbs easily. I’m terrified of trying that now. Before I got hit, I used to walk 40 minutes a day, either around the apartment building or around the park or somewhere else. The accident has slowed me down quite a bit. I can barely make it across Broadway while the walking signal is on. Now, I’m cooped up in my apartment a lot.... Continue reading

Lindsey and Hernan's Story - South Boulder Signals

by Darcy Kitching, about 7 years ago

[Story collected at Neighborhood Office Hours, South Boulder.]

“We live on the south side of Table Mesa, and we find that the lights are not responsive to the pedestrian signals. We usually press the button, then wait and we find that the cars clear away before the light changes, so we just go across. The signal changes only once the cars are built up again, and they have to stop when there’s no one waiting. We are expecting our first baby in September. It would be nice to be able to cross the street quickly so we can get where... Continue reading

Bill's Story - Walking for Heart Health

by Darcy Kitching, about 7 years ago

[Story collected at Neighborhood Office Hours, South Boulder.]

“I had heart surgery, so I walk every day to keep my heart healthy. Frequently, I walk at night, too, because I’ll look at my pedometer at the end of the day and see I still have a couple thousand steps to get in, so I’ll go out and meet my goal. I have a suggestion: it would be helpful to have more paths were bikes and pedestrians are separated. I’m hard of hearing and my balance isn’t as good as it used to be, so I often can’t hear bicyclists coming... Continue reading
